On November 7, Anthropic, a leading AI company known for its safety-focused approach, announced that it will collaborate with U.S. defense and intelligence agencies. The company will provide access to its Claude AI models as part of a partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Palantir. These AI models will be integrated into government operations such as data processing and document preparation.

Anthropic has stated that it will leverage Palantir’s data analytics tools to quickly process large data sets and provide valuable insights by identifying patterns. This collaboration aims to enhance the effectiveness of government operations by providing faster and more accurate analysis.

The U.S. government’s interest in AI has been rapidly increasing. The value of AI-related federal contracts rose by 150% from August 2022 to 2023, reaching $675 million. The Department of Defense (DoD) has become a key player in this space, with its AI-related contracts growing from $190 million to $557 million during this period.

Under the new deal, Claude 3 and Claude 3.5 models will be incorporated into Palantir’s Artificial Intelligence Platform, hosted on AWS. Both Palantir and AWS have received Impact Level 6 (IL6) certification from the Department of Defense, which ensures maximum protection against unauthorized access and tampering.

The deal will provide U.S. defense and intelligence agencies with advanced AI tools capable of rapidly processing and analyzing vast amounts of complex data. Kate Earle Jensen, head of sales and partnerships at Anthropic, said the integration would greatly improve intelligence analysis, assist in decision-making, and enhance operational efficiency across government departments.

Anthropic’s usage policy ensures that its AI systems will only be used for lawful purposes. The company prohibits the use of its models for disinformation, weapon design, censorship, domestic surveillance, or malicious cyber operations.
